Astrolobus (plural = Astrolabi) were one of the first devices in the western world to calculate the length of the moon month. Astrolabi were used on land to determine seasons for sewing and other purposes.
But as well on sea for navigation purposes. One can
see that for this purpose the instrument in rather inaccurate. However
these were instruments of high precision for the time they were in
use for practical purposes.
